What is paper bulk, and why does it matter?

Paper bulk refers to how much volume a paper has in relation to its weight. A higher bulk doesn’t necessarily mean a thicker paper - it simply means the paper is more airy and ‘fluffy,’ giving it a more substantial feel without increasing weight.

A high-bulk paper feels thicker and more substantial without adding extra weight, making it ideal for books, packaging, and premium print projects. Lower-bulk paper, on the other hand, is more compact and smooth, perfect for sleek, high-end prints.

The European Union’s Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) ensures that products do not contribute to deforestation. The regulation will take effect on December 30, 2024, and Lessebo Paper is committed to full compliance.

Did you know that Lessebo Paper’s journey from tree to paper is rooted in sustainability and tradition?

At Lessebo Paper, we primarily use pulp from birch trees, a species abundant in Swedish forests. Birch is an excellent raw material for paper production due to its high fiber strength, natural whiteness, and ability to produce high-opacity sheets with superior image reproduction. This means our paper reaches great strength without the need for excessive energy-intensive treatments and requires less bleaching.

Our process begins with responsibly managed forests, ensuring every harvested tree is part of a sustainable cycle. From there, the birch wood is processed into pulp using environmentally friendly methods, focusing on minimising waste and energy consumption. The pulp is then transformed into high-quality paper through a meticulous production process that combines centuries-old craftsmanship with modern technology.

Carbon Black

What is Carbon Black?

Ever wondered about Carbon Black? Carbon Black is a material commonly used to add pigmentation to products, providing a deep black colour. In paper manufacturing, carbon black is traditionally used to achieve rich, dark hues.

However, Lessebo Paper’s products, such as Lessebo Colours Pitch Black 9099 and Black Bird 9191, are produced without using carbon black. This decision stems from our dedication to superior quality standards. By avoiding carbon black, our papers are perfectly suited for hot foil applications, a popular choice in premium productions.

FSC Certified^® paper

What is FSC Certified® paper?

FSC Certified® paper ensures that the raw materials derived from wood comes from sustainably managed forests. In order to have an end product certified and thus can be labelled with the FSC logo, the entire supply chain, often referred to as “Chain of Custody”, has to be verified and certified. All papers produced at Lessebo Paper is comes from sustainably managed forests.

VAT coloured paper

What is a VAT coloured paper?

VAT coloured means that the paper is coloured through the sheet. We add pigments into the pulp before producing the paper which gives a more premium product, which also is more scratch resistant. The Lessebo Colours range consist of VAT coloured papers suitable for both printing and packaging applications of high quality.
